In my opinion it is the No 4 British Lee Enfield , with a 10 round magazine smooth fast action , simplicity and reliability and good accuracy.

  1. I will answer this as WWI- WWII rifles, as these are commonly known. There are some modern highly specialized bolt action sniper rifles now days(such as .50 cal.BMG's) that are unbelievable(and unaffordable). Here's my list,

    1 Mauser 98k-German

    2 1903 Springfield -US

    3 Enfield- English

    4 Moslin Nagant-Russian

  2. agreed my good man

  3. Yes started of as the No1 Mk1 Lea Enfield 303.

Made in India and converted to 7.62mm

    And made in Australia

No1 started in 1916 and the No4 In the 1930 and production in England stopped in 1956 but continued in Australia for a short while approximately 14,000,000 where made and helped win wwi ww2 Korea and several smaller parties says it all

  4. While the SMLE is a very good rifle, it does not compare to the German 1898k.

The bolt and the firing pin on the SMLE does have a flaw - it is a 2-piece mechanism that is quite brittle.  The 1898 does not have the problem.  The SMLE also c***s on closing, the 1898 and it variats c***s on opening, to me it is a much smoother design.

The 1903 Springfield is basically a copy of the 1898.  There was even royalities paid by Springfield to Mauser for the infringement.

While the 1898 is normally a 5 round in block magazine, there were modifications that brought it to 20-30 rounds.

The 7mm and 8mm German cartriges, which the 1898 variants were chambered for, are rimless while the .303 British round had a rim.  In the heat of battle, if the SMLE was not loaded correctly with the rimmed casing, the rifle would not feed.  This problem was corrected much later with the rechambering in .308 (7.62x51) however.

Finally, the balance of the SMLE when compared to the Mauser or Springfield is totally off - VERY topheavy.

Don't get me wrong, the SMLE is a great rifle, but the Mauser is better as a military bolt action rifle.

  5. The No.4 MkI SMLE is an excellent rifle. In fact, the Brits postponed transitioning to a semi-auto due to all the positive attributes you mention. As far as a favorite, I can't really focus in on one, ... I collect old military bolt actions and enjoy them all. Each has its very own pluses and minues, ... but you can't go wrong with a good old No.4. My Dad used one for hunting white tail deer for years and swore by it.

  6. 6.5 Swedish Mauser has to be one of the most accurate and now sporterised rifles around

  7. The M40 sniper rifle, used by the USMC since the Vietnam War and is still in service today.
