As much as I love my Military Police brethren, they are not police.  They are more of the security guards for the Army.  Not that they are not good enough, it is more of the Army won't let them.  They are doing less and less law and order these days, and more and more combat ops.  And most bases are using a lot more civilians for law enforcement.  L and O is not the mission of the MP's any more.

One could lead to the other, its not a crime to do service for your country then for the civilian world, it will help you out in the long run anyways.

Go through the military. You'll get good training. To be a civilian cop you need either a degree or military experience. Plus military experience looks good on a resume.

Depends if you like being paid or not.

Why not both?  Why don't you go into the reserves or national guard as an MP?  You get the training, and college benefits.  There are no perquisites for a degree to then move to a police department.
