  1. The basic must do in order to advance in a timely manner.

Army- the ability to do alot of push ups and run long distances in short periods of time.

Navy- Keep those uniforms looking pretty. If you've been busting your @ss and trash your uniform in the process, most will take notice of your uniform rather than your achievements.

Marines and Air Force I can't say.

In general, the more @ss one kisses, the better one's chances are for advancing. In some instances females can flirt with higher ups, and even sleep with them to improve their chances.

Ranks- E1 is the lowest rank, O10 is the highest.

  2. Promotions in the military are based on a couple of things.  The lower ranks, E1 - E4 are based primarily on time in service and time in the current pay grade.

The higher NCO ranks, E5-E9 are more selective and performance based.  You have to be sponsored by your supervisor to attend what's called a promotion board.  The promotion board is basically a board consisting of your Command Sergeant Major and accompanying First Sergeants.  It's basically a professional interview.

After that, at least in the Army, you get your actual promotion based on a complicated points system that correlates to your MOS.  Higher NCO ranks are achieved by your service record and accomplishments.

You can go to www.military.com to find a list of all the military ranks.

  3. All branches of service have different promotion structures.  They have similar rank structures that can easily be found on wikipedia, or ask.com. For the most part there is job performance evaluations, testing, and a promotion board.  Not all branches have the promotion board, but there are many factors that determine a promotion.  There is also the number of available positions for a certain pay grade.  The process slightly differs in each of the armed forces, but as for pay grade it is the same E-1, E-2, E-3, E-4, E-5, E-6, E-7, E-8, E-9 for enlisted, and 0-1, 0-2 etc for officers.

  4. different branches have different conditions...use google.
