Military relocation?

My husband is a marine and graduating from his MOS school in 29 palms next week. His orders are to report to MCS Cherry Point in North Carolina. He has to report there the day after his graduation so I can't go with him yet because we don't have enough money. He's in the field right now so I can't talk to him about it.. I'm so confused.. This is all new to me.

Can anybody give me any information about the relocation process in general? Anything??

The military will pay to move your family's belongings from 29 Palms (&/or where you are currently living) to MCAS Cherry Point.  He needs to set it up through his personnel office (I'm not sure what term USMC uses... Navy uses "Personal Property Office").  You can either pay for it yourself up front & get reimbursed (DITY move) or you can have the military move it for you (HHG shipment).

  3. When he gets there, he can have the government move your house hold goods there all on thier dime. He should be authorized o base family housing. The Marines/navy will move your stuff from anywhere you want as long as it is in the alloted miles. You can go because he gets paid to move you from his Home of Record to his new PDS. Tell him to check with Personnel Property when he checks in.

  4. Once he gets there, he'll have to do the paperwork to have you relocate to his duty station.  The government will pay for this, and will provide an advance if needed.  Make sure he does the paperwork and gets the orders first, or you'll end up paying out of pocket.

  5. One suggestion for you being new to this is to find out if the base closest to you offers a moving class and if you'd be allowed to take it.  It shouldn't matter what branch of service your nearest base is, the basics of what you're allowed for moving don't change.  We've used Personal Property/Household Goods Offices (or PPO/HHGO) at Army and Air Force facilities to set up our moves even though DH is Navy.  If you can get into a class they'll give you a ton of information on everything from moving your household stuff to where to find information on your new base to what money you're entitled to.

    Generally, either your DH or you (if you have a valid Power of Attorney or POA) will have to contact the PPO/HHGO to set up your move.  You have a couple of options.  You can have the military pay to move all your stuff.  If you do that the office will take your information and contract with a civilian moving company.  The moving company will contact you to settle for sure your move dates and times for a walk through.  You'll have to be there for the walk through where they estimate how large your load will be and if you have items that will need special handling.  Then you have to be there for your pack and load dates to supervise.  Once the stuff is on the truck the company will give you a date when they think the load will get to your new city.  You give them a contact number for there or update the Inbound PPO/HHGO at the new base once you get a contact number.  If you have a place and they can contact you when the truck gets in to town you'll be able to have your stuff delivered right away.  If they can't get a hold of you or you haven't found a place yet the company will put your stuff in storage for up to 90 days.  Once you get a place they have 30 days to arrange to deliver your goods from storage.

    Your other option is to do a Personally Procured Move (PPM) which is sometimes still called a DItY or Do It Yourself move.  If you take that option you usually get some money up front to rent a truck.  You pack, load, move and unload your stuff.  Then you can put in to get the rest of the money once you're done.  But you also have to do things like weigh the truck full and empty and keep a lot more records to prove your costs.

    A third option is a bit of both and something I wish I had known about for my first move.  You have the military arrange to move the majority of your stuff.  But you do a partial DItY move.  You can do this with your private vehicle and get reimbursed for moving the clothes and supplies that you have to have with you while traveling.  You can also take things that have a high sentimental value with you.  And items that the moving company can't or won't take.  

    But really, this is all basics.  Take the class if you can.  You'll find all the information useful.
