Question:

Military transfer, and owning a home help?

My husband is in the military, and we now have orders to move overseas to Italy. Both of us are going; However, we own a home on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and we have it up for sale, and for rent. Its a brand new home, only about six months old. We are having a hard time selling it with our favorite reltor, and renting it out. Does anyone know of something that might help us out? The house is empty, and we are making this huge note every month while its just sitting there. I would love to see all of Italy and the surrounding countries, but owning a home here in the U.S. is going to hold us back from seeing anything. Any ideas?

  1. Sorry, but you bought the house, knowing you were about to be transferred.  I would post signs around the base showing the house for rent.  List it everywhere you can.

Unless you want to destroy your credit rating and have it foreclosed on, you have to keep trying to sell or rent it.

  2. with the market being like it is you probably won't sell for a while and if you really want to sell it now your going to have to drop the price probably less then what you paid for it since its so new, have you thought about paying a staging company and staging the house (company that decorates, buys furniture and knick knacks for the house to make it look homey) make sure your agent is putting it in the local newspaper on sundays, good luck to you

  3. Try putting the house on craigslist.com or on backpage.com. I found my apartment and job on craigslist. hope this helps.

  4. no help from the military, if that's what you are talking about.  the housing market sucks everywhere.

  5. Check the phone book for Property Management companies. They will rent out the property for a fee and take care of maintenance and collecting rent. You may find one that will also sell it for you while you are in Italy.

  6. I kept moving and each time I bought a new home.  The old one I would rent out.  So after a few assignements,  I owned six homes in five different states.  I kept them all rented and after 20 years,  some I sold and some I kept.  I plan on retiring in 10 years and will own four homes.  Not a bad way to save money.   The trick is to keep them all rented and to do that you have to not be greedy.
