Mill Pinpoint delights at the Betfair Steel City Cup
Mill Pinpoint made his 25 year-old owner, Kelly Macari, proud last night, winning the £7,500 Betfair Steel City Cup at Sheffield. This is the most significant success of Macari’s young career.
"I'm so proud of him," she said, "it's a wonderful success for the entire team, and I'm pleased for his owners, in particular Alan Longley, who isn't well at the moment."
Pinpoint was perfect in the races leading up to the finals, winning each one with little difficulty. Last night, he was up against a better group, but was still able to pull out the win, providing Macari with her first Category One win.
Early on, it was Was Not Me challenging 5-4 race favourite, Pinpoint, with Farloe Lee trying his luck after the first bend, but Pinpoint would not trade the lead with either hound. Coming up to the finish line, it was Elwick Chris’ turn to give Pinpoint a run for his money, but in the end, Pinpoint won by a neck over Chris.
Was Not Me finished third, beating her kennelmate Farloe Lee by 1 ¾ lengths. Oneco Black finished in fifth place, while Craighall Horse took last.
Later in the day was the Stadium 480 Puppy race at Sheffield. Stepaside Bigjak took the win over Elwick Archer by 2 ½ lengths. Bigjak was best out of the traps, and kept ahead of Archer for the duration of the race. Finishing another 1 1/3 lengths behind Archer was Big Ronnie Doppa, who had a terrible start, but made up significant ground in the second half of the race. Odds race favourite, Droopys Luisao, finished in fourth place while Full Duck and Subway Kate finished in fifth and sixth respectively.
Next on the card was the Sheffield Stadium Stayers Maiden, a race over 660 metres. 2-1 race favourite, Droopys Joyous, led after the first bend and held it all the way to the sixth and final bend, before losing gas and dropping all the way back to last place. The late drop off was uncharacteristic of Joyous, who won her last 660 metre race on June 16 with a late charge near the finish line, moving from second to first. In the end, Owlett Star took the win by 1 ¼ lengths over Kahara City with Tornaroy Tastey just a head behind in third.  Bay City Billy and Thurlesbeg Marc took the final two spots ahead of Joyous, who ended up 4 ¼ lengths behind Thurlesbeg Marc.
