Mill Pinpoint demolishes field in All England Cup
What a season it's been for trainer Kelly Macari.
The up-and-coming handler celebrated her second category one success last night with Mill Pinpoint in the williamhill.com All England Cup final at Newcastle.
The Steel City Cup champion has a knack of saving his best till the big occasions, and blew the high-class field – which included Derby champion Bandicoot Tipoki – away with an incredible break from the traps, putting him two lengths clear at the first bend. From then on, only outsider Peggys Way threatened to challenge the all-the-way leader, but couldn’t find enough in the tank to land a telling blow, eventually going down by two and a half lengths. Tipoki, who was chasing a £25,000 bonus, never seemed to look comfortable but did make some encouraging headway to grab third. The favourite, Charlie Lister’s Yahoo Jamie, was knocked over at the first bend after a shocking start, but thankfully managed to complete the course, seemingly with no injuries.
Nick Savva has had a quiet season in terms of big-race success, but he had reason to cheer last night as Westmead Maldini caused an upset in the williamhill.com Northern Puppy Derby. As with all middle distance races, early pace is crucial and Maldini got away quickest of all to land the spoils in a time of 28.51sec. Droopys Luisao grabbed second in front of the well backed favourite Elwick Bolero.
On a night where greyhound racing enthusiasts were treated to four category one contests, Rebellious Queen took the Angel of the North final for Pat Rosney. The slow starting b***h got up late to mug Elwick Blitz right on the line with Faypoint Lauren running on for third.
Colin Redden was left jumping for joy in the stands as Anfi Gem landed the £3,000 prize fund in the Great North Run decider. The white jacket came through late, crowding between Hesley Dingo and Droopys Arshavin to win in a time of 40.89secs.
