Quote:

And in four cloistered booths along a back wall [at La Concha bakery], a steady succession of customers quietly sends millions of dollars to family members abroad.

The booths, each outfitted with a chair and a red telephone, connect customers with an exchange agency that handles international bank transfers. Callers describe how much they want to transfer and to whom, and operators take care of the rest. The money is handed over to a clerk behind the counter, and then it's back to the business of chatter and churros

  1. Tell you what...I lived and worked in Saudi Arabia with my husband for 5 years. All of us expats sent 90% of our money home...we did NOT try to assimilate, we did NOT learn the language, we did NOT have respect for the rules and customs of that country....Let me tell you that millions were sent home there and continue to be...It works both ways, always has .....You failed to notice the importance of the fact that the bakery obiviously benefitted financially, its an American business, pays taxes...so their money is also supporting you...

  2. "Is a bakery the right place for this type of activity?"

It's where they handle their bread, man...
