Milos Raonic and Ryan Harrison upset seeds at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open
Ryan Harrison upsets Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 7-6(4)
American teenage pro Ryan Harrison, currently ranked World Number 152, added to his already impressive repertoire of victories by scoring a win over World Number 25 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The 18-year-old player defeated his Spanish
opponent in straight sets, winning the match 6-3, 7-6(4) in one hour and forty-five minutes.
Harrison, who has been coached by the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, scored seven aces in the match. His opponent, who was seeded 22nd at the Indian Wells Masters, could not score even one. Harrison was broken four
times, but he managed to defend a total of seven break points. In addition to this, he also broke Garcia-Lopez five times out of seven during the match. Both players committed four double faults each.
Harrison first came to attention at the 2010 US Open, where he entered the tournament as a qualifier and defeated Croatian fifteenth seed Ivan Ljubicic in his opening match. His run did not last long, and he was ousted in the second
round by current World Number 38 Sergiy Stakhovsky. However, he managed to drive the Ukrainian pro to five sets and established himself as a player to watch out for.
With this latest victory, Ryan Harrison will proceed to the third round of the hard court tournament against Canada’s Number 1 player, Milos Raonic.
Milos Raonic ousts Mardy Fish 7-5, 6-4
Canadian tennis pro and World Number 37 Milos Raonic defeated American seeded player Mardy Fish in straight sets in his second match at this year’s ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells. The tennis prodigy ousted thirteenth
seed Fish 7-5, 6-4 in just over two hours.
Raonic, coached by Galo Blanco, turned pro three years ago in 2008. He has accomplished a great deal in his short professional career, winning his first ATP title just a few weeks ago at the 2011 SAP Open. He also scored wins over
players such as World Number 9 Fernando Verdasco and Mikhail Youzhny. The 20-year-old has defeated Fish once before, scoring a three-sets win over the player at the 2011 Memphis semi-final. This victory has brought their head-to-head score to 2-0 for Raonic.
Fish did his best to hold his own in the first set, scoring one ace and committing no double faults. He even pushed the set into a tie-breaker, before Raonic took over the match and used his legendary serve to score four aces.
In total, the Canadian pro scored 10 aces and broke his opponent twice to win the match.
He will now face Ryan Harrison, who has been touted as America’s answer to Raonic himself. A match between the two players will probably be interesting, although Milos Raonic is expected to come out on top.
