Milos Raonic continues his Toronto campaign successfully - Tennis News
Seeded 16th in the tournament, Milos Raonic is on a steady journey at his home soil Rogers Cup 2012, the hard court championship being held in Toronto, Canada. The Thornhill resident defeated his Serbian
competitor, Viktor Troicki, with a straight set win, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round match on Tuesday.
He could be the first Canadian player in 50 years who might bag the coveted Masters Series title from his country. After the withdrawal of the influential tennis stars like Federer and Nadal, his chances of claiming glory
at the Rogers Cup have immensely increased.
The tournament director Karl Hale told the media, “For the first time in modern Canadian tennis history, we have a Canadian seed and someone who is actually a threat to win the tournament. He’s right in there with the best
players.”
Ranked 24th in the ATP World Tour Rankings, Raonic, seems to be in good hands on his home ground. He has made a smooth journey to the top and aims to continue to rise to the top-10 in the near future.
He will be facing enormous amount of pressure in this tournament, exactly the kind of pressure that Andy Murray faces every time he steps in at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon.
In a press conference Raonic told the media, “I converted the opportunities that I created on his serve. I was effective there. Then obviously taking care of my serve and I felt like, considering the whole situation being
tight and everything, I felt like I was moving my legs well. I expect a lot from myself and I am going to push myself to achieve that.”
If his game continues with the same transcending pace then he might even beat the Olympic gold medallist, Andy Murray later in the tournament. Previously, both players faced each other on the clay courts of Barcelona and
the Canadian tennis ace came out with a shocking upset.
The 21-year-old will be competing against, Juan Monaco in the third round of the Championship who bump down the local challenger, Vasek Pospisil earlier.
