Milos Raonic defeats Yen-Hsun Lu at SA Tennis Open
Milos Raonic, the fiery young sensation from Canada, defeated second seeded Chinese Taipei player Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets at the SA Tennis Open in Johannesburg. I
In an awesome display of serving, qualifier Raonic caused a major statistical upset by beating the 2nd seed.
It was, however, a victory expected by most tennis fans, as Raonic’s ranking does not give him due credit. Especially with the run of form he’s had. Raonic is a much better player than any other qualifier in the tournament.
The hard serving Canadian racked up 14 glorious aces on his way to victory, in a comprehensive display that yielded a score line of 6-3, 6-3.
Raonic was dominant from the get go. Even though the initial games of the first set were fairly straight-forward, Raonic held mostly to love. In his return games, he consistently pushed his opponent to deuce, and that was what eventually secured him a break.
The burly Canadian’s own serve was untouchable, as he delivered an impressive 74 per cent of them within the T, compared to his opponent’s 34 per cent.
More than that, his use of his successful first serves was brilliant, as he won an amazing 86 per cent of the points that featured his first service. Raonic broke twice in the first set, winning three points off the first serve of his opponent and a ridiculous
15 off of his second.
The second set was played in much the same vein.
Raonic has rightly been making waves in the international circuit, as his game play today justified all the hype about him that’s been going around.
Although his first serve percentage dropped to 57, he was still as dominant as ever while serving. He kept up the display by winning 92 per cent of the points off of his first serve, and 80 per cent off of the second.
His opponent wilted before him, and a single breaking opportunity was all the Canadian needed to seal his victory. In a remarkable display of tennis prowess, Raonic had won easily, 6-3, 6-3.
