Milos Raonic dumps Philipp Petzschner to reach the round of eight – If Stockholm Open 2011
Rising star of the current year, Milos Raonic from Canada, registered a comprehensive straight sets victory over the 64th ranked German, Philipp Petzschner, in the second round of the If Stockholm Open on Wednesday.
Sixth seeded Canadian took just 73 minutes of play to wrap up victory at 6-3, 6-3, to make it to the quarter-final round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
Raonic displayed his amazing hard-court tennis skills once again to dispose of the German veteran from the competition in an assertive manner. Rated at number 29 in the ATP World Rankings, the Canadian registered his 30th
win of the running season to make it to his fifth quarter-final appearance in 2011. Raonic avenged his three-set loss to Petzschner, who defeated him in quarter-final round in Halle, Germany, earlier this year.
Raonic has already won an indoor hard-court championship in San Jose in February this season and looks in top form to bag another one in Stockholm. The Canadian faced no real challenge throughout the contest and cruised through
the sets with the utmost ease to reach victory.
The sixth seeded Canadian belted seven cracking aces while delivering 70 per cent of his serve on target. He dropped merely four points on his first serve, clinching 28 out of 32 points to drive Petzschner out of the competition
in a comprehensive fashion. Raonic converted three of his seven break opportunities in the game and didn’t face a single break point from the German opponent in the entire matchup to come out as the winner.
Petzschner received the first jolt of the day in the fourth game of the opener, when Raonic broke his serve to lead 4-1 early in the contest. The Canadian held his lead till the conclusion of the first set at 6-3 and got 1-0 up
in the matchup to get the upper hand.
The unseeded German held his serve in the opening three games of the next set before Raonic stung another serve break to get into the lead. The sixth seed went on to nail his second straight break point to finish off the contest
at 6-3, moving into the quarter-finals of the If Stockholm Open.
Raonic will either face the fourth seed Argentine, Juan Ignacio Chela, or will compete against the unseeded Bulgarian, Grigor Dimitrov, in the quarter-final to make it to the final four. Chela and Dimitrov will compete in the second
round match on Thursday and the winner of the two will take on Raonic in the round of eight.
