Milos Raonic ends 2012 season improving his career high ranking to 13 – Tennis News
Just 21 years old, Milos Raonic of Canada has already registered an emphatic season. He climbed to the 13th rank in the world and ended the year at a high-note. It was a blistering season for the Canadian superstar who
has multiple years in his career to make a mark and reach the top rank. It will not be wrong to say that he definitely possesses an ability to reach the number one rank in the world in coming years if he continues to play like this and doesn’t fall victim
to the niggling injuries that have destroyed careers of many players.
The beginning of the season for the 21-year-old Canadian superstar was terrific. He started the year at Chennai, playing Aricel Chennai Open as the fourth seed. He conquered the title and dispatched the Top-2 seeds in the last
two hurdles on his way to the title. It was a magnificent start for the season but the dismal performance in the AAMI Classic at Kooyong was a good reality check for Raonic who fell in the opening set of the event.
He reached the third round of the year’s first Grand Slam Championship, the Australian Open; won the singles Rubber contest of the Davis Cup against the French star, Julien Benneteau, and carried the momentum into the SAP Open
at San Jose; won the title after dispatching some impressive names like Denis Istomin and Kevin Anderson on his way. It was another classic tour for the Canadian who was the third seed in that contest.
The form was carried into the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship where the fourth seed Raonic dispatched all his rivals until the Austrian Jurgen Melzer forced him out of the competition in the grand finale of the competition.
It was a sad ending to another promising campaign; the upset wasn’t on the cards at all especially considering the form of the Canadian but sometimes luck just doesn’t work. Melzer won that match 7-5, 7-6(4).
Raonic lost cheaply in Indian Wells and Miami but reached the semis at Barcelona. Madrid Open, Rome and French Open didn’t yield a lot for the 21-year-old youngster and so did the tour of London for Wimbledon. The poor patch extended
to Olympics and Toronto as well. However, the youngster came back in the form at Cincinnati; reached the quarters and coupled it with a fourth round exit at US Open. He lost to Kei Nishikori at Rakuten Japan Open final and ended the year with three cheap wins
at Shanghai, Valencia and Paris Masters. However, it didn’t change the fact that it was the best season for the Canadian allowing to him to improve his career high ranking to world number 13.
