Milos Raonic on fire this season: Tennis Special
Booming star, Milos Raonic, is enjoying a successful on-going season, making three final appearances and becoming the first player to win two titles at the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour this season.
The 21-year-old thundered into the 2012 circuit and after crushing everyone; he grabbed the title at the Aircel Chennai Open, the first tournament of the season held in Chennai, India. Raonic was seeded fourth in this event and
ranked 31st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings. However, he displayed top notch performance at this hard court event, stunning second seeded Nicolas Almagro and top seeded Janko Tipsarevic without losing a set to earn the spotlight.
He carried his momentum into the Australian Open, first of the four Grand Slam events held in Melbourne and tumbled over Italy’s Filippo Volandri with a bagel in the opening round. Despite crashing out to a former world number
one, Lleyton Hewitt, in the third round, Raonic cruised to a 10 match winning streak. His stunning victory run included a title at the SAP Open (outmuscled Denis Istomin in the title-round) and a final showdown at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in
Memphis (lost to Austrian number one Jurgen Melzer in the final round).
"I think I served pretty flawlessly throughout the week," the high flying Canadian said after defending his title in San Jose. "I feel like I’m a much better tennis player than I was last year. I feel last year I was sort of playing
probably higher than my potential. This year, I felt like I came in a much better player and I played well. "
The Canadian assertively entered the BNP Paribas Open 2012, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event held in California and dumped the Argentinean star, Carlos Berlocq, in straight sets in the second round. He received a first round
bye after being a seeded player at this hard court event. In spite of his tremendous run of form this year, he bowed out to the Swiss Ace, Roger Federer, in gruelling three sets.
Raonic is looking forward to improve his game after his loss against the 16-time Grand Slam champion at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
“Even though I was down a set, I don't think I was playing poorly,” the Swiss Maestro was quoted after his win over Raonic. “I might have missed one running forehand in the breaker, and that was about it. That cost me the set.”
The youngster showed flawless skills in the opening set against the world number three, Federer. He squandered the only break chance but outclassed the veteran in the tie-breaker. Raonic’s few errors cost him the match but his
skills were praised by everyone.
Raonic is eying to remove the few errors he has in his game in order to outclass the top four players at the ATP rankings. He needs to focus on his serves and should fire more aces in order to ease past the higher ranked players.
