Milos Raonic scores tough win over Simon Greul at second round of the Barcelona Open
Canada’s top tennis player Milos Raonic had a difficult time during his second match at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, and was forced to play all the way into three sets against Simon Greul. The German World Number 125 gave Raonic a run for his money, and the match went on for over two hours and fifteen minutes before Raonic managed to close it with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5) victory over his opponent.
Milos Raonic, who is 20 years old, seemed to be in control of the match in the first set. The player scored six aces and committed no double errors, winning 92 per cent of his first serve points. He also saved all four of his break points, while managing to convert two opportunities against Simon Greul. He concluded the first set 6-3, winning five points more than his opponent in the match.
The second set shifted the situation into Greul’s favour, as the German pro scored three aces and committed no double faults. He also managed to break Raonic thrice out of four opportunities. Raonic, on the other hand, scored one ace and committed one double fault before breaking Greul just once despite having five opportunities.
The third set of the match was the most competitive one, as both players fought for a chance to defeat each other and extend their run at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. Both players were quite equally matched and scored three aces apiece in the last set of the match. They also committed one double fault apiece, and went on to defend all of their break points in this set. Greul had just one opportunity to break Raonic, while the Canadian had three chances against Greul. The match concluded after a tie-breaking game, and despite the fact that Raonic won two points less than his opponent, he went on to win the set 7-6(5). The final score-line was 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5) to Milos Raonic.
Raonic will be facing Croatian tennis player Ivan Dodig in the third round of the tournament.
