Milos Raonic spectacular season – Tennis Special
Canada’s Milos Raonic enjoyed his career best season this year. He secured four title-round berths and reached his career best rank of number 13 in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings. As a result, Raonic
grabbed his second Tennis Canada’s Male Player of the year award.
The Canadian youngster started this year’s campaign standing at number 31 in the ATP World Tour Rankings. He made a thunderous entry at the Aircel Chennai Open, the opening ATP event of the season held in Chennai, India. Raonic cruised past his entire rivals
and after overpowering Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in the final round, he captured his second career title.
Raonic maintained consistency in his game at the Australian Open, first of the four Grand Slam events held in Melbourne. He made a third round showing before bowing out to the former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt.
The 21-year-old unleashed flurry of winners after that and went on a nine games winning streak. Mustering his success further, he captured a title without losing a set and helped his nation overpower the French team in the Davis Cup. Raonic conquered the
SAP Open in San Jose for the second time and reached the final showdown at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis (lost to the Austrian number one Jurgen Melzer).
The Canadian youngster secured a semi-final berth at the Barcelona Banc Sabadell in the clay court season. He exited from early rounds in the remaining clay court tournaments but made a quarter-final showing at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.
He displayed poor performances at the Wimbledon Championships and the London Olympics but lifted his game towards the US Open. Raonic reached final eight at the Rogers Cup in Toronto and the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati before making a fourth
round showing at the Flushing Meadows.
The Canadian star then made another final appearance at the Rakuten Open in Japan. He bowed out to eighth seed Kei Nishikori but recorded his biggest victory by stunning top seed Andy Murray in the semis.
After enjoying this amazing season, Raonic was awarded the Tennis Canada’s Male Player of the Year for second straight team. He was quoted in a press conference:
“It is a great honour to receive this recognition from Tennis Canada again this year. It was a great season but I’m working to continue to grow and develop as a player. All the support I’ve received this year from the Canadian fans has been incredible and
I’m excited to see the growth of our sport continue in Canada.”
Raonic is looking forward to carry his momentum in the upcoming season.
