Milos Raonic surprised by Sam Querrey in the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Canada’s rising star, Milos Raonic, could not give a good performance at the All England Club, as he lost to the 64th ranked, Sam Querrey, in the second round at the Wimbledon Championships in London.
Raonic squandered a lead of one set and went down in four sets 7-6(3), 6-7(9), 6-7(10), 4-6 after a fight of three hours and three minutes.
The opening set went without any break, as both players served heavily to hold all of their games and level the score at 6-6. Raonic played superbly afterwards, allowing the American to claim only three points and sealing it 7-6(3).
In the second set, both players broke each other once in the first 12 games and evened out the proceedings at 6-6, forcing a tie-breaker. There was an intense fight between Raonic and Querrey later on but the American clinched
two straight points in the end to seal it 7-6(9).
The proceedings in the third set were quite similar to the first, as Querrey and Raonic did not allow each other to break serve and equalised the score at 6-6 to take it to a tie-breaker round. Once again, there was a close contest,
as both players went neck-to-neck till 10-10 but then the American grabbed a mini-break, making the most of it to win 7-6(10).
After getting a 2-1 lead in the match, Querrey made an ideal start to the fourth set, snatching a break in the opening game and consolidating on it to attain a 2-0 advantage. The American sustained his lead till the end, capturing
it 6-4.
Querrey pounded 21 aces and committed three double faults in the match. On the other hand, Raonic bombarded 25 aces and 58 winners on the American.
The Canadian was expected to reach, at least, the second of the Wimbledon Championships this time. Talking to the reporters after the match, the right-hander said, “I was really going out there (Friday) knowing what I need to do
to get better. I played ... worse. It’s not a really motivating feeling. (Querrey) did a lot of great things. He was playing consistent. Where I felt I needed to make him play a lot of balls and make him move. I showed weakness. He felt that same way about
me, and took control of that.”
Querrey is now drawn to play Marin Cilic of Croatia in the round of 32. Cilic defeated Poland’s Lukasz Kubot in straight sets in the second round.
