Milos Raonic trounces Tobias Kamke to reach the quarters – SAP Open 2012
Defending champion, Milos Raonic, outplayed the German rising star, Tobias Kamke, in his opening match at the SAP Open 2012 on Wednesday. He clobbered a 6-2, 7-6(7) victory over the 25-year-old to book a spot in the quarter-finals at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour tournament held in San Jose, California, United States.
The 21-year-old stayed on track to defend his title after outclassing the world number 89 in their second meeting. After earning success in this one hour and 25-minutes duel, he not only improved to a 2-0 record in the FedEx ATP Head2Head series by 2-0 against
Kamke but also secured a spot in final eighth of this ATP 250 series event.
Seeded third in the tournament, Raonic thundered at the HP Pavilion and drew the first blood in the opening game. He maintained his intensity and after breaking the German’s serve again in the fifth game, the Canadian jumped to 5-1. The youngster then held
his serves once more and bagged the opener with a 6-2 win.
The booming Canadian, ranked 32nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, lost his rhythm in the second set. He suffered the first blow in the fourth game to go 3-1 down. However, Raonic recovered in the very next game and dragged
the set to a tie-breaker. He subjugated in it and eventually clinched the set with a 7-6(7) score line.
The beaming youngster high spiritedly started this season campaign at the Aircel Chennai Open. He shocked the world number 11, Nicolas Almagro, and the top seed, Janko Tipsarevic, to lift his second career title at this ATP World Tour 250 series event held
in India.
Next up for the third seed is the winner of the match between the fifth seed, Kevin Anderson, and the Australian challenger, Matthew Ebden.
Earlier that day, second seed Andy Roddick edged past his qualifier compatriot, Denis Kudla, in troublesome three sets to reach the last eight. The former world number one showed his class in the second set tie-breaker and after breaking Kudla’s serve twice
in the decider, Roddick sealed the match with a 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-4 success.
