Milos Raonic will play exhibition event this winter in Montreal – Tennis News
An exhibition match is being planned for next year and organizers are hoping to attract crowd through rising stars, Milos Raonic and Genie Bouchard.
Ranked 15th in the world, Raonic is Canada’s highest ranked player in its history. On the other hand, Bouchard is a former Wimbledon junior champion and these two will play the event on March 18 next year.
Raonic is happy to be the part of this event, as he said, "It was a delightful opportunity because I've tried to do the same thing in Toronto to help the sport grow. Tennis is difficult. You don't know how results and schedules
will play out, so if you have something pre-set in advance and advertised well, it's pretty special. It gives an opportunity not only for tennis fanatics but sports fans in general to come out and see us play."
Bouchard stated, "Anyone's special. I'll see how I do against an opponent like that. After the off-season, I'll start again in January and play lots of pro tournaments.”
The event will be organized by StarGames, Madison Square Garden and Evenko. This event was first held in last year, in which Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl featured, gathering 8,200 fans.
Raonic is having the best season of his life, boasting a 38-15 win-loss record. The Canadian made an ideal start to the season, beating Janko Tipsarevic in three sets 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 7-6(4) to win the Aircel Chennai Open. Then
he defended his SAP Open by easily beating Denis Istomin in the final.
In the following week, Raonic reached the title match of Regions Morgan Keegan Championships but lost to Jurgen Melzer in straight sets 5-7, 6-7(4). He performed averagely in the next three tournaments but then he reached the last-four
stage at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, stunning Nicolas Almagro and Andy Murray in consecutive matches.
Raonic failed to impress at the French Open and Wimbledon, losing in the third and second round respectively. The Canadian lost to Tsonga in the second round in one of the longest singles match in the history of Olympics.
Appearing at the Toronto Masters for the first time, Raonic reached the quarter-finals. He matched his performance in the following week, as he advanced to the last-eight stage of the Western & Southern Open. The Canadian number
one stunned the then world number seven, Tomas Berdych, in the third round in Cincinnati.
The 21-year-old then qualified for the fourth round at the US Open and won both of his Davis Cup matches against South Africa.
