Milwaukee Brewers' Corey Hart inclined to stay with the team – MLB News
Milwaukee Brewers' first baseman Corey Hart has expressed his desire to stay with his club. Being one of the longest-tenured player of the Brewers (after his 11th round Draft pick in 2000), Corey Hart replaced Mat Gamel this year after the player fell victim to knee surgery.
"Obviously, I'd like to stay with the Brewers," Hart said after a report surfaced recently, claiming the player was in talks with the Brewers for three year contract extension. "I haven't heard anything from Jeff yet about what the Brewers have in mind. He didn't know when they might talk about it.”
Hart’s contract is to end next year and there is already enough buzz about Hunter Morris' potentially being a favourite candidate to man first base. Morris is the MVP of the Double-A Southern League, emerging as a proficient and accomplished hitter.
Representing Huntsville, he has maintained a .303 batting average this year, smashing 28 homers and 113 RBIs in 136 games. As to when exactly will he be part of the Major League is not known at the moment given the fact that he has to start at Triple-A Nashville in 2013.
However, irrespective of what transpires in that regard, the fact remains that Hart has demonstrated consistency since the beginning of his career. Among other things, he has hit over 20 homers in five of the last six seasons.
Earlier there were reports that Hart and agent Jeff Berry of CAA sports were actually seeking a three-year deal. The current contract is to last until 2013, where the player shall earn a $10 million salary.
Hart said he was waiting for what happens next and would be happy if contract extension materialised.
He said, "If it happened, it would be awesome. I've played my whole career in Milwaukee and I'd like to stay there. Right now, we're just waiting to see what happens. I'm signed for next year."
The Brewers are setting their eyes on the upcoming season, being a team that can capably deal with both defensive and offensive challenges. Hart, having demonstrated his brilliance, will be key for the Brewers’ offence.
