Milwaukee Brewers' free-agent Prince Fielder preparing for a deal – MLB News
The fate of accomplished free-agent slugger Prince Fielder’s final deal with any team may have to remain in the balance. However, there are reports that the Washington Nationals may have been aggressively but patiently pursuing the player.
It is nevertheless intriguing to observe that not many offers have yet been made that the player will readily accept. As reports surface, it is said that the powerful hitter is looking for one of the biggest deals in baseball.
The recent 10-year deal that Albert Pujols made with the Los Angeles Angels for over $250 million has spurned Fielder to hold out for something similar. However, Prince Fielder’s agent Scott Boras is looking for a deal that exceeds $24.7 million per year
which is above Pujols’ $24.6 million annually.
Earlier, it was widely speculated, of course not confirmed, reports that the New York Yankees may be considering Prince Fielder’s name for their team. But the part owner of New York Yankees, Hal Steinbrenner, dismissed the reports.
“We've got a budget," Steinbrenner said. "I'm a little concerned about our payroll. Brian knows that. Having said that, if a deal comes up that has favorable terms, then it's something I'm going to look at."
However, Prince Fielder is faced with something inevitable now if his reported deal with the Washington National does not materialise. It happened in 2004 when Vladimir Guerrero of the Baltimore Orioles was awaiting a big contract in free-agency, but ended
up getting $70 million for five years.
As Spring Training is also around the corner, it is indeed surprising at best to see that a player of Prince Fielder’s calibre has not received the kind of favourable deal he had been long anticipating. Now that he no longer has his name on the Yankees’
acquisition list, Washington Nationals may have something to offer him.
It all, of course, heavily depends on how Fielder adjusts to it. While he has got every right and possesses the talent to demand for a big sum when it comes to deal, there are times when a player has to give in to something and get what serves him in the
long run.
