Milwaukee Brewers' general manager recalls Nyjer Morgan’s 2011 blitz – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers' general manager Doug Melvin paid glowing tribute to Nyjer Morgan on Friday, November 2, for his outstanding performance in Major League Baseball during 2011. Morgan on Friday elected for free agency after he declined outrighting to Triple-A Nashville.
Melvin said, "I'll always look back at what Nyjer gave us [in 2011]. A good person, good competitor. He handled this year great. He's a real pro. Sometimes there might be the perception that he's maybe too 'active,' or whatever you want to say, but he's a guy who comes game-ready every time."
It was in 2011 that he had batted .304, something which remained a source of pride not only for him but for the team as a whole as the club made it to the postseason, outrivaling many teams in the Division and league. Back then, he was being touted as one of the inseparable parts of the Brewers’ offence.
That did not quite transpire as 2012 was quite different as far as the hitting is concerned. All that he could collect was .239 batting average in 122 games in the regular season.
Be that as it may, Morgan’s decision to become arbitration-eligible had its likelihood, being expected for quite a while now.
Nonetheless, his performance in 2011 was something that elicited praise almost from everyone who was part of the team and who had seen him play that year.
"When I'm done as a GM, that will go down as one of the most exciting years I had, and I told Nyjer at the end of the season that he bears a large responsibility for taking that team and me as a GM as far as I've gone in the postseason," general manager Doug Melvin said.
It is now Logan Schafer who will fill the space as Morgan departs. The Brewers, on the other hand, will keep trying to bring in a host of young and energetic players to strengthen the offence.
In the months to come, the Brewers’ focus will be filling the roster with the players that can make them a fiercely competitive side in the league.
