Milwaukee Brewers’ Jose Veras loses arbitration case – MLB News
In what was this year’s first arbitration case for the club, the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, February 14, won arbitration against the reliever Jose Veras. The reliever who had made a demand of $2.35 million will now get $2 million; something he might not
have anticipated.
However, much as the outcome of the hearing was not what Veras had expected, his agent Bryce Dixon alluded to David Ortiz’s case whose club, the Boston Red Sox, were willing to go for an arbitration if things cannot be sorted out on the contract extension
within the period envisaged.
For Dixon, however, the outcome was surprising.
"If the Red Sox were almost willing to take 'Big Papi' to arbitration, [Veras] understands this is part of the business," Dixon said. "You just have to roll with it. With relievers, there are just a ton of variables you can nit-pick on, and you never know
what the arbitrators are going to hang their hat on. "We're surprised by the outcome, but Jose is fine with it.”
Dixon did not mince his words to express the disappointment he and Veras felt due to the end result of the arbitration that they had. Nonetheless, his emphasis was that Veras understood it was business and that he is happy to be part of the Brewers.
“Obviously, we're disappointed. We thought we were the favorites going into it or we wouldn't have gone," Dixon said. "But Jose understands that this is just part of the business.”
It will be pertinent to recall that it was last year that the Milwaukee Brewers opted for swapping Casey McGehee with the then Pittsburgh Pirates player Jose Veras. Back then, the total amount of money that Veras earned in the Pirates was $1.35 million.
Both the player and the club’s counsel were allowed an hour’s time to argue their cases. As things progressed, it became clear that the two were not willing to have a settlement, culminating with the arbitration decision that accepted the club’s $2 million
offer.
In the 79 games that he appeared the past year, Veras managed to have two wins with 3.80 ERA that he had, with the career ERA of 4.11 in 255 games.
