Milwaukee Brewers’ Mat Gamel to be given chance on first base – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke stated on Friday, March 9, that Mat Gamel will be put on first base this season as Corey Hart battles a knee injury. The knee surgery will keep Corey Hart sidelined for now, prompting the Brewers to find a replacement
in Gamel.
He is already proving his choice absolutely right. On Friday, the game against the Cleveland Indians saw the player hit another homer, helping the team win 12-2. Gamel has got all the right reasons to click in the team.
"I'm putting him there now to see what he does," manager Ron Roenicke said. "If he is comfortable with it, maybe [Gamel will hit fifth] until Corey comes back. ... If it works, now the guy has confidence in there and you go into the season and it doesn't
bother him anymore."
Corey Hart was to come at a time when the Brewers no longer had the services of Prince Fielder available to them. The star slugger had become a free agent and afterwards signed a long term contract with the Detroit Tigers.
However, prior to the commencement of the season, the injury that struck the first baseman has already forced the Brewers to bring Gamel. From what it appears Gamel is indeed a good choice for the Brewers.
"It would help just because of the type of hitter he is -- he fits in that spot," said Roenicke.
With a big share of natural-born talent that the player has, he will be an ideal substitute at the Brewers disposal. The fact that Ryan Braun is also back will help the Brewers keep the offence ever charged and ready.
The 26-year-old player has a long way to go to prove his instrumentality as an indispensible player for the Milwaukee Brewers. Be that as it may, the opportunity at hand will not be missed by the player as he makes regular appearances in the Cactus League.
If he succeeds in displaying a decent performance, he will be able to become a regular feature of the team in the upcoming season. It will be exciting to see what impact Gamel will have for the Brewers during the next few games in Spring Training.
