Milwaukee Brewers’ Mat Gamel to be placed at first-base – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers have a less known player to replace the former slugger Prince Fielder: Mat Gamel. The 26-year-old player will have his first big league shot this season when he will serve at first-base as the replacement of Prince Fielder.
This development is significant keeping in mind the calibre of Prince Fielder. A hitter par excellence, Prince Fielder brought about countless big wins for the Milwaukee Brewers and provided credible help in grabbing the team’s first Division title victory
in the National League in almost 28-years.
The team’s right fielder Corey Hart appears to be happy with the decision and regards it as something big for the young player.
"I could see Maty being like a Nelson Cruz," Hart said. "Always crushed in the Minor Leagues, limited chances [in the Majors]. Sometimes it just takes a guy a little bit longer to figure it out."
Mat Gamel has put a profoundly good impression on Corey Hart who thinks that Gamel has been better in the Minors than many of the players. In what is effectively a prediction, Hart also thinks Gamel will surprise a lot of people this season.
"[Gamel] has hit better in the Minors than a lot of us in here. I think he's going to surprise people," Hart said. "One of these days, he's going to 'get it.' I think he's going to be a big part of what we do this year. Obviously, he knows this is his year."
The past season might have been an average one for the player who is otherwise capable of doing better. Of 171 at-bats that he had in 85 games, the player had a slugging percentage of .374, having had a .222 average as a whole.
So far, Gamel has done relatively well in Spring Training if it is the criterion to judge his performance. The fact that he will replace Prince Fielder at first-base brings about bigger challenges that he needs to effectively handle. It will not be long
before the observers find out how successful this player will turn out to be. The Brewers will be looking to Gamel during the 2012 regular season for some positive results.
