Milwaukee Brewers acquire reliever Jose Veras in trade with Pittsburgh Pirates for third baseman Casey McGehee
Hours after acquiring free agent third baseman, Aramis Ramirez, the Milwaukee Brewers went ahead and dealt their unnecessary third baseman, Casey McGehee, for a more critical position filler on the line-up, reliever, Jose Veras, from the Pittsburgh Pirates
on Tuesday, November 13, 2011.
It was not something that McGehee, a 29-year-old from Santa Cruz, California, United States, did to get himself ejected from the team but rather after signing on Ramirez, the team was not in need of having such multiple third basemen, which came to the advantage
of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
For Pittsburgh, McGehee certainly adds some cornering depth on the roster.
“Casey McGehee adds a quality option for us at both corner infield positions and adds depth to our position player group,” Pirates general manager, Neal Huntington, said in a statement.
McGeehee’s rookie season was a breakthrough for him back in 2009 and followed it up with even a bigger performance in 2010. The past 2011 Major League Baseball (MLB) regular season did not go in his way performance wise and was placed second on the starting
behind Jerry Hairston Jr. later on in the season due to a .223 batting and 13 home runs along with 67 RBIs.
His last year compared to his previous performance of hitting .285, 23 homers and 104 RBIs, certainly showed that he lacked behind, but could be rejuvenated after joining a new team for the upcoming season next year.
"I was a little bit caught off-guard as far as how fast the change came . . . My first reaction was I was excited to get a fresh start with a team that seems to be excited to get me over there, knowing that I was wanted there,” McGehee said after learning
about the trade.
While it might be a time to start afresh, he will certainly miss Milwaukee.
"At the same time, the reality sunk in that I was going to have to leave a place that I really liked", he added.
Veras on the other hand was 2-4 with a 3.80 ERA in a career high of 79 appearances last season with the Pirates.
