Milwaukee Brewers beat St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 in Game 4 to level the series – MLB Playoffs
Randy Wolf virtually disarmed the St. Louis Cardinals’ offence on Friday, October 13 to help the Milwaukee Brewers win 4-2 at Busch Stadium.
Brewers’ left-hander threw seven innings, giving up only two runs, to even the series 2-all in the best-of-seven game series.
"It was a big feeling just to be back out there again after my last start," said Wolf. "Just to be able to get another opportunity to pitch again was important.”
The veteran pitcher went up against the Cardinals’ starter Kyle Lohse who proved to be costly for the team in his 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and giving up three runs with a 6.23 ERA. John Axford had the second save of the series as he only allowed a
gift in the ninth inning to finish the game.
“I think it's classic because playing each other so many times, we're dead even," manager Tony La Russa said. "It comes down to that day, who makes the pitch."
Even though the Cardinals could not strengthen their grip on the game, ultimately losing as Albert Pujols thinks his is the only team capable of beating the Brewers in their own home ground.
"We're pretty much the only team that's played pretty well in Milwaukee. Flip the page and hopefully come back to tomorrow. It's a great series," Cardinals’ star Albert Pujols said.
Both Kyle Lose and Randy Wolf started fairly aggressively when the game kicked off on Thursday. The starters were looking to dominate early and put their opponents on the back foot. However, Matt Holliday hit a big homer in the second to give the team a
1-0 lead, followed by that of Allen Craig whose homer doubled the lead for the Cardinals.
Randy Wolf warded off the St. Louis Cardinals’ offence to go for any further runs. He put in a tremendous pitching performance. Jerry Hairston Jr. and Yuniesky Betancourt on the other hand, had their respective runs in the fourth inning to level the score
for the first time in the game.
Ryan Braun added another distinction to his already illuminating career by hitting and scoring a run in the fifth to get the tiebreaking run. It was George Kottaras who scored a single in the sixth inning against Mitchell Boggs to give the Brewers a seemingly
strong edge in the game with a 4-2 lead.
Wolf pitched a shut-out seventh, Francisco Rodriguez threw a scoreless eighth and John Axford gave up a hit in the ninth inning to wrap up the game with a decent 4-2 victory for the Milwaukee Brewers. The series is now even at 2-all.
