Milwaukee Brewers close to signing free agent Alex Gonzalez – MLB News
Along with many other Major League Baseball teams, the Milwaukee Brewers are also preparing hard for the 2012 before anything more irritant incident happens in the near future.
With the speculations about Prince Fielder, who is not on the cards to join the Brewers again, the management has turned their attention towards signing free agent short-stop Alex Gonzalez.
Earlier, this was only just a speculation but now it is confirmed that the Brewers are serious to sign a good player for making their roster more competitive in the absence of Fielder. For Fielder, who has contributed tremendously bringing the Brewers franchise
in the top level teams of the MLB, is now heading to another team after failing to receive a potential extension in his contract.
Recently, the Brewers’ general manager Doug Melvin has also mentioned in the media that they needed a player at short-stop position and now considering signing Gonzalez for one year.
GM Melvin said, “We're not there yet, but it's a good possibility, He was probably the best defender (of the three available shortstops), He still has good range; makes the tough plays. He is durable. He's a very similar offensive player to 'Yuni,' but he's a
better defender. I want to sit down and go over a bunch of stuff first, Getting 'K-Rod' back, we feel very good about the back end (of the bullpen), We don't have to trade K-Rod. He can help us win games.”
Melvin stated all these details when he was about to attend the MLB’s annual Winter Meeting but reporters surrounded him pouring many questions in while he had to give answers. Though, he still has not officially accepted that the deal is almost done with
Gonzalez but many sources have confirmed that Gonzalez will be coming into the Brewers’ roster next season.
In the eyes of many baseball experts, Alex Gonzalez will bring a positive boost in the team as the Brewers are a little down with Prince Fielder’s loss and planning to make a steady way forward in 2012.
