Milwaukee Brewers confirm making a contract offer to Ryan Dempster – MLB News
With the onset of offseason, what the Milwaukee Brewers’ fans have not yet seen is acquisition of any eminent player. They, however, have seen the big names go: Zack Greinke followed by Ryan Dempster.
The Brewers had reportedly made a $100 million offer to Zack Greinke. But he chose the contract offered by the Los Angeles Dodgers. And when it came to Ryan Dempster, the veteran pitcher opted for the Boston Red Sox as the news surfaced on Thursday, Dec.
14.
Zack Greinke had been traded by the Brewers in July this year to the Los Angeles Angels. However, they were awaiting offseason to go for Ryan Dempster – an offer made to him was officially acknowledged by the Brewers general manager Doug Melvin.
"I don't want to say what our offer was, but we made what we considered to be the best offer we could do," Melvin said after news of the deal broke. "He decided to go with the Red Sox. They have to make the determination about the gap, if there's a big gap
in money. And there might have been. The other thing is, there might have been other teams involved, too."
These developments do raise some questions. The reason the Brewers were looking for an experienced pitcher in the rotation was that they had seen Greinke go. Add to it the struggling bullpen which might not be able to sustain pressure if the rotation is
not performing well.
But the likes of John Axford and Burke Badenhop seem best arms available to the Brewers’ bullpen. But there is a slew of candidates that can fill the holes in the roster. Milwaukee Brewers, therefore, are exploring the best available names from the in-house
options.
That is what the general manager also alluded to; with an emphasis that the decision is based for strengthening the team for the long-term.
"There are still a bunch of names on the board," Melvin said. "We're still working and looking at add players. We're just making sure we're making the right decisions for the short term and the long term, too."
