Milwaukee Brewers considering signing free-agent relievers – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, December 17, signed Donnie Murphy to a minor league contract, and invited him to Spring Training.
To note here is the fact that that this offseason has not witnessed any major transaction so far. General manager Doug Melvin also suggested that there are a few free-agent relievers whom the Brewers may consider to sign.
Those the Brewers are deliberating to speak to – and may eventually sign, are Kyle Farnsworth, Jon Rauch and Ramon Ramirez. Doug Melvin confirmed that they may be among the relievers whom the Brewers may sign – without making any more comments on the nature
and timing of the contracts.
But what the general manager clearly stated was that there would not be any big signings; confirming the earlier reports that the Brewers were no longer looking any big names in the market.
"There may be a couple of pitchers that we're adding to the bullpen here that are still out there on the market," Melvin told the MLB Network Radio channel on SiriusXM. "But we're not going to enter into the high-priced free agents this year. We're going
to keep our flexibility."
Two more free-agent relievers who have commanded the Brewers attention are Jason Frasor and Mike Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, a left-handed pitcher, whom the Brewers wanted to get in 2009 Winter Meetings, but could not do so, had 3.03 ERA this past season in the 47 appearances that he made with the Washington Nationals.
Right-handed Frasor, on the other hand, has so far had 10 Major League seasons. Representing the Toronto Blue Jays, the pitcher posted 4.12 ERA in 2012, making a total of 50 appearances.
All the aforementioned five free-agent relievers made enough number of appearances in the last season to attract attention. The performances, as could be seen, were good enough to win them a berth in the Milwaukee Brewers.
However, how things go from here is something to be seen. Bullpen, though, will remain an important area to be addressed by the Brewers. Signing the right relievers, therefore, will go a long way to determine the team’s success in the MLB `13.
