Milwaukee Brewers continue to keep an eye on Carlos Gomez’s performance – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers' manager Ron Roenicke said on Monday, August 27, that the club is looking into Carlos Gomez’s performance, as he is being given more time in defence. But it is the consistency that the Brewers might be missing in Gomez.
Having previously remained the part of New York Mets and the Minnesota Twins, the player did struggle to maintain his hold as a centre fielder, something that the Brewers are willing to try this year.
"The at-bats, he'll have a real good game, and then all of a sudden, the next day it will be just so-so," Roenicke said. "We're wanting him to string together a lot of them.”
Carlos Gomez is being tried in centre fielder for now after the club made some adjustments, moving Corey Hart to first base and Norichika Aoki to right field. Such moves are aimed at ascertaining the compatibility level of the player.
This aspect was addressed by Roenicke who spoke about it in Monday’s talk with the press. With .282 on-base percentage and a .233 hitting average as Monday’s game against the Cubs was to be played, Gomez appears to have a lot to do to book a permanent place in the line-up.
Roenicke said, "Defensively, I know he dropped the one ball [in Tuesday's loss to the Pirates], but we know he's going to play good all the time. Baserunning, he's really good stealing bases. But the offensive part is the part we've always wanted him to be more consistent, and that's what we still would like to see, a little more consistency."
The Brewers are playing a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs starting from Monday. While the Brewers retain fourth position in the National League Central Division, they hope they can have a better finish once the regular season ends.
Milwaukee was successful last year with their ability to make it into the playoffs. But this year, things have not remained as good as it did last year. It is for this reason that the club is exploring viable options, finding players that can perform up to the mark.
