Milwaukee Brewers crush Cincinnati Reds
The Milwaukee Brewers crushed the Cincinnati Reds 13-1 on Wednesday to conclude a three-game series between the two clubs.
Casey McGehee led the way for the Brewers after going 3-for-6 at the plate and adding four RBIs.
Brewers pitcher Randy Wolf improved his record to 13-11 after allowing just one run in six innings of work. Wolf, however, felt he got of to a slow start.
"That first inning I didn't have the command I wanted," Wolf said. "After that I got better and better."
Wolfe, who pitched a shutout in his last start, gave up four hits and had seven strikeouts for another solid start and prevented the Brewers from being swept. Wolfe also pitched in offensively
with two hits.
Reds starting pitcher Johnny Cueto however, was anything but solid. Cueto who dropped his record to 12-6 lasted only 1 1/3 innings after giving up eight runs on eight hits. It was Cueto’s
shortes start of the season.
"Either he didn't have it or they really had it, one of the two," said Reds manager Dusty Baker. "You knew they were going to explode sometime. They have a heck of a lineup. It looked
like it was a football game where it was third- and-long and they were just coming at your quarterback all night. That might have been the worst night I've seen since I've been here."
Despite the loss, the Reds reduced their magic number to three wins for clinching the National League Central division, as the St. Louis cardinals lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates in other
Wednesday action.
The Brewers finished the games with 19 hits including four from rookie Lorenzo Cain. It was the first four-hit game of Cain’s young career. Corey Hart had a strong game hitting a two run
shot and walking twice and Craig Counsell chipped in with a three-run homer. Counsell admitted that it was about time the Brewers broke out offensively.
"We've got a good offensive team and it was nice to finally break out," Counsell said. "I had a small farm out there tonight and stranded most of them. So it was nice to come through once."
Despite the 13-1 score, the Reds opened the scoring in the first inning after Jonny Gomes brought in Jay Bruce with a single. The Brewers broke the game open in the second inning where
they exploded for eight runs. The Brewers then added two runs in the third and fourth innings to open up a 12-1 lead. The Brewers then completed the scoring in the fifth inning after a sacrifice fly from Hart scored Cain.
