Milwaukee Brewers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 in Game 2 of NLDS – MLB Playoffs
Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer and Prince Fielder added an RBI single on Sunday, October 2 to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second game of the National League Division Series at Miller Park.
The Milwaukee Brewers, appearing completely unstoppable, now have a 2-0 lead in the five-game Series. The victory came by the extraordinarily charged Brewers’ offence that involved Jonathan Lucroy’s go-ahead run with a bunt in the five-run sixth inning.
"It's a free RBI if you execute and I really work hard to get that down," Lucroy said. "A safety squeeze, all you've got to do is get it down to the right area."
With that go-ahead run, Lucroy paved the way for five-run sixth inning, also giving Braun a chance to do what he was expected to. "Good teams always take advantage of the other team's mistakes," Braun said.
That single effectively used the rare chance and turned it into golden success for the Brewers. Milwaukee did not look back with a 9-4 lead from the sixth inning until John Axford had another save in the ninth inning.
"The little things matter," said Jerry Hairston Jr., who scored on Lucroy's bunt. "When you have guys like Braunie and Prince with the big power, the little things add up."
Paul Goldschmidt scored a homer in the second inning after Ryan Braun scored a two-run homer in the very first inning, giving the Brewers a 2-0 lead. With the lead coming down to 2-1 in the second inning, both teams continued their efforts to dominate the
game.
Prince Fielder singled to centre and then Rickie Weeks scored a one-run triple in the third inning to effectively put the Brewers in charge of the game with a 4-1 lead.
Nonetheless, far from giving in early, Chris Young homered in the fourth while Justin Upton hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning to level the score.
Jonathan Lucroy’s go-ahead single changed the course of the game after it stood level until the sixth inning. Corey Hart singled to centre, Nyjer Morgan hit a two-run single while Braun snapped another single to take the score to an ultimate 9-5 lead for
the Milwaukee Brewers.
As the Arizona starter Daniel Hudson was left befuddled with this surge by the Brewers’ offence, LaTroy Hawkins was brought in to pitch. He tossed a shut-out seventh, Francisco Rodriguez had a one-hit eighth inning to maintain the Brewers lead.
Entering into the ninth inning, John Axford threw a hitless and scoreless inning to wrap up the game with yet another sensational victory for the Milwaukee Brewers which now hold a 2-0 lead in the five-game series.
