Milwaukee Brewers defeat Chicago Cubs 5-2 – MLB Update
The Milwaukee Brewers improved their track record on home to 48-16 after they comprehensively defeated the struggling Chicago Cubs 5-2 at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Friday, August 26.
The Brewers, continuing their rise to form late in the season, are now comfortably placed at the top of the National League Central division and unless something bizarre happens for them, they are assured of a postseason spot. Milwaukee is nine games ahead
of the second-placed St. Louis Cardinals and this lead is substantial to see them through.
The Cubs started the game impressively with Starlin Castro hammering a gigantic 432-feet home-run down the centre field before Jeff Baker produced a well-crafted RBI to deep right in the third inning, allowing Darwin Barney to complete his run and allow
the Cubs to register an imposing two-run lead over the Brewers.
Brewers’ starter Randy Wolf, after leaking two runs in the first three innings, made a strong comeback to restrict the Cubs to the same score till the end of his spell. Wolf threw 101 pitches in 6.2 innings and allowed just two runs amid four hits to bring
his earned-run average down to 3.37 for the season. He managed 65 strikes in this stretch and struck-out three batters for his 11th win this season.
The Brewers managed to score their first run as late as the fourth inning but it was enough to give them the required thrust to topple the Cubs. George Kottaras pulled the ball towards the right field to fetch a 380 feet home-run before Ryan Braun showed
his class in the fifth inning by a skilful RBI effort which allowed Corey Hart and Nyjer Morgan to encircle the bases and take the Brewers ahead of the Cubs. Barney’s fielding error in the same play allowed Braun to complete his run which took the Brewers
to a two-run lead at the bottom of the fifth inning.
Prince Fielder has been exceptional this season and this game was no different. He made his contribution in the seventh inning when his single to the left field allowed Hart to complete his second run of the game.
John Axford pitched in a perfect last inning to seal the victory and record his 38th save this season.
