Milwaukee Brewers defeat Cincinnati Reds 8-1 to sweep series – MLB Update
The Milwaukee Brewers swept the three-game series on Sunday, September 18 beating the Cincinnati Reds 8-1 at the Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati.
Prince Fielder and Carlos Gomez went for respective two-run homers to dominate the cornered Cincinnati Reds.
Having had some bad experience in the recent past, whereby the Brewers had lost six of their eighth games at this ball park, Milwaukee played this series with renewed energy.
This was something that Fielder alluded upon when asked how felt after the game. "It's hard to lose when you pitch and hit," Fielder said. "It feels better when you do it on the road. It's not easy to do it on the road. It gives you extra confidence. We
know we can win at home."
The team manager Ron Roenicke has also had complete acquaintance with the undeniable fact of a vicious circle that they had to eliminate this time. "Guys still felt good coming in," Roenicke said. "We've had trouble here. They came in determined to get back
on track, and I think we did that."
For the Reds, the series was an absolute fiasco. Having lost the first game 6-3, second by 10-1, the Reds could not overcome the Brewers’ offence which was at their best.
Without Cueto out there to serve, the Reds had tremendous difficulties. "It was a frustrating weekend," he said. "They beat us up pretty good."
Sunday’s game was a nightmare for Matt Maloney, the Reds’ starter whose performance sharply deteriorated. Carlos Gomez was first to hit a two-run homer to put the Brewers in a comfortable situation followed by that of Prince Fielder’s two-run homer.
With the score at 4-0 by the end of the first inning, Zack Greinke certainly had a relative edge on the Reds’ hitters. He tossed some brilliant pitches to frustrate the offence and keep the Brewers in the command of the game.
Fielder had a run to score with the throwing error of Mesoraco and Rickie Weeks had a two-run single in the second inning to take the score to 7-0 for the Milwaukee Brewers, virtually putting an end to all the hopes of the Reds making a comeback in the game.
Sam LeCure replaced Maloney, but it seemed too late. Devin Mesoraco was the only one to score for the Reds in the fifth inning while Corey Hart homered to left in the sixth for the Brewers to make it 8-1.
Greinke only gave up a run in seven innings with 10 strike-outs and Takashi Saito wrapped up the game with a shut-out in the ninth to win the game 8-1 for the Brewers.
