Milwaukee Brewers defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 – MLB Update
Prince Fielder had three home-runs on Tuesday, September 27, to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by 6-4 at Miller Park.
After losing the first game 9-8, the Brewers staged a comeback thanks to Prince Fielder.
Much as he is one of the prolific hitters in the league and has outdone his contemporaries in one way or another, he did not have a three home-run game until now.
With much at stake as the Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks are fighting for the NL Number two seed, the win meant a lot to the Milwaukee Brewers. Nonetheless, what comes out at the end depends on how the Diamondbacks play the other games.
"They're fired up for it," Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke said before Arizona wrappd up their victory. "They're fired up to finish this season off right to get into the playoffs and whether it's just home-field advantage, I don't know."
The Brewers are reputed to be a stiff host at home, a team hard to beat. That is what remains to their advantage.
"That's very important," Fielder said. "Not that we can't do it on the road by any means, but everybody knows we play a lot better at home."
Randy Wolf of the Brewers gave up four runs in 5.2 innings while Ross Ohlendorf also gave up four in the five innings that he pitched. It was John Axford who outrivaled all other pitchers of the Pirates to save the game.
Pirates’ Matt Pagnozzi scored the first run for the team in the second inning as it took Prince Fielder two more innings to score the first homer of the game followed by that of Rickie Weeks that gave the team a decent 2-1 lead.
Ross Ohlendorf and Josh Harrison scored a single each in the fifth inning to put the Pirates on a 3-2 lead which was reversed back by a homer coming off Prince Fielder’s bat, making the score 4-2 for the Brewers.
After Alex Presley levelled the score with his two-run walk, Fielder went for the third homer of the game in the seventh inning to give the Brewers a safe 6-4 lead. The lead was defended well by Francisco Rodriguez who pitched a shut-out eighth.
John Axford had his 46th save by pitching a shut-out ninth to conclude the game with a 6-4 victory for the Brewers. Milwaukee put in a tremendous performance as they fought hard throughout the game. The Pirates will be looking to improve their
efforts in the last day of the regular season. It will be interesting to see if the Brewers manage to get the Number two seed over the Diamondbacks.
