Milwaukee Brewers defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 – MLB Update
Zack Greinke pitched six solid innings on Wednesday, September 28 to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 at Miller Park.
Greinke led the Brewers to new heights in an exciting season for Milwaukee at home with a 2-1 victory in the three-game series.
"Even though we were in the playoffs, it's been exciting still just knowing you're making it and you still had to play for home field," Greinke said. "It was good."
Carlos Gomez, Jonathan Lucroy and Corey Hart went for homers to pave the way for the National League series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, a team which is the NL West Champions with their equally tremendous performance.
Wednesday’s performance imbued the Brewers with joy and renewed confidence to face rivals like the Diamondbacks on Saturday, October 1.
"This is what it's all about. We talk about playing meaningful games in September so you can get to October," Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke said.
For him, the month of October is a harbinger of success and glory for anyone who stands to show his talent on the field.
"Once you get into October, it's really fun to see who is going to be that guy that steps up and lights that moment where it's on him,” Roenicke said.
After Zack Greinke successfully pitched the first two scoreless innings, Jonathan Lucroy went against Jeff Locke to score the first homer for the Brewers. With his early lead, Corey Hart followed and hit the second homer of the game to double the lead for
the Brewers.
Jason Jaramillo’s single brought the lead down 2-1 but Carlos Gomez hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to take the lead to 5-1. Jerry Hairston Jr. scored a single in the fifth to raise the lead to 6-1 while the Pirates intensified efforts to bring
down the lead.
As Andrew McCutchen hit a single in the sixth inning to make the score 6-2 for the Pirates, Corey Hart had a big hit to reverse the lead, keeping the Brewers at the helm with a 7-2 lead in the game.
Takashi Saito pitched a shut-out seventh inning while Francisco Rodriguez allowed a run to Pedro Ciriaco that temporarily brought the Pirates back in the game. However, John Axford had his 46th save of the season to pitch a shut-out.
The Brewers put in a brilliant performance as they fought hard throughout the game and managed to dominate the Pirates.
With a 7-3 lead favouring the Brewers, Axford concluded the game with a shut-out ninth to help the Brewers not only win the three-game series but also brace for the upcoming Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
