Milwaukee Brewers defeat St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 – MLB Update
Randy Wolf epitomized brilliance with his solid eighth inning on Wednesday, August 10 to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals by 5-1 at Busch Stadium.
It was the Brewers’ second win in as many games against the Cardinals.
Wolf struck a humble note, crediting the team for the win. "We've just got to keep playing well," Wolf said. "We have a tough schedule ahead of us. We can't sit back and think we can cruise from here on out."
The team manager was obviously satisfied with the performance. "I think we carried over what we were doing at home and I'm hoping that this is the point where it doesn't really matter to them whether we're at home or road, they know we can win at both places,"
manager Ron Roenicke said. "That's important for them to feel that way."
Having won the first game by 5-3, the Milwaukee Brewers put up a remarkably strong offence from the first inning of the game on Wednesday. It was Prince Fielder who took Jake Westbrook to task and hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run for the Brewers.
The early lead that the Brewers had was soon levelled by Albert Pujols. He scored a single against Randy Wolf to tie the score by the end of the first inning. Both Wolf and Westbrook threw a scoreless second inning.
However, the Brewers hitters had an opportunity in the third inning to capitalise upon. It was Prince Fielder who drove in his and team’s second run in the third inning. Yuniesky Betancourt followed by another single to left, giving the Milwaukee Brewers
a comfortable 3-1 lead.
Randy Wolf then took it on himself to keep the lead intact. His capably put strategy worked out as he pitched hitless scoreless innings. While Jake Westbrook went into the eighth inning to not allow the Brewers to score any other run, the 3-1 lead seemed
sufficient enough for them.
Wolf also tossed the eighth inning, a shut-out with 3-1 lead favouring the Brewers. When Marc Rzepczynski relieved Westbrook, little did he realise, or he probably had a hunch, as to what was coming ahead.
Corey Hart had a hit that brought in two runs for the Brewers, giving Milwaukee a 5-1 lead by the end of the ninth inning which also saw two brilliant hits. Francisco Rodriguez proved to be an unplayable closer and threw a shut-out ninth to wrap up the game
with a 5-1 victory for the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers put in a tremendous effort as they managed to restrict the Cardinals’ offence. St. Louis will be looking to improve their performance in their next match-up.
