Milwaukee Brewers defeat St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 – MLB Update
The Milwaukee Brewers put in a tremendous effort on Tuesday, August 9 as they beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 in a closely fought game at Busch Stadium.
The win also gave the Brewers a comfortable 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
Casey McGehee went for a double in the 10th inning to snatch the victory, leaving the Cardinals reeling behind. "Obviously, I would have rather done it throughout (the game)," McGehee said. "The guys in front of me had some great at-bats to give
me a chance. It was a big win for us."
John Axford had his 30th consecutive save in the 33 games that he has played as a closer. It was obviously a big moment for the Brewers’ player.
"The biggest thing is I'm just trying to attack hitters and go after them, a lot more than I was earlier in the year," Axford said. "I don't think there's really anything different in my stuff or my attitude when I'm out there."
After having thrown two scoreless innings, Shaun Macrum provided a useful opportunity to the Brewers offence. Cory Hart took it to account in the third inning when Edwin Jackson came on the mound.
Corey Hart homered to give the team a 2-0 lead in the 3-hit third inning. With the comfortable lead to their advantage, the Brewers’ starter had to pitch effective enough innings to maintain the lead. The pitcher was able to keep the St. Louis Cardinals
hitters at bay.
Entering into the fifth inning, Shaun Marcum allowed the first run to the Cardinals as Corey Patterson snapped in a single, bringing the lead down to 2-1 for the team. However, Jonathan Lucroy’s single in the sixth inning gave the Brewers a 3-1 lead.
Marcum was unable to contain the Cardinals offence in the sixth inning. First it was David Freese who singled to left, allowing Matt Holiday to score and then Gerald Laird whose single levelled the score by the time the sixth inning came to an end.
With the score tied, the relievers then tried their level best to not allow any opportunity to the rivals to score. LaTroy Hawkins had a shut-out ninth, while Octavio Dotel of the Brewers was subject to big hits.
McGehee and Yuniesky Betancourt scored a single each in the 10th inning to take the lead up to 5-3, putting the Cardinals’ hitters in trouble.
Axford, who had already 29 games as a closer, successfully tossed a shut-out 10th inning to have a safe 5-3 win for the Milwaukee Brewers, keeping the team in a dominant position in the three-game series. It will be interesting to see how Brewers
carry on their winning momentum.
