Milwaukee Brewers defeat Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 to take last-game revenge – MLB Update
After losing their interleague series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays by a huge 8-4 margin, the National League’s Milwaukee Brewers took their revenge and overpowered their rivals 5-1 in the second fixture, at Miller Park on Tuesday, June 21.
The Brewers’ starter Zack Greinke played an exceptional game and took ten strike-outs for the second straight start and third time in ten starts. In last start on June 16 against the Chicago Cubs, though Greinke took out ten batters but he also consumed
eight runs that not only sent him to his second loss but also nip his seven-game winning streak.
In this game, however he allowed just one run for the first time in 2011 and allowed four hits over seven innings to earn his seventh win. He allowed a run in the seventh inning when his team was leading 2-0. His allowed single to the Rays’ catcher John
Jaso moved the score to 2-1. It was the first and the last run of the Rays in this outing.
"This is the game we needed from him. We talked about it, we needed Zack to have a big game, and he did," Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke said. "I think any time you put a challenge to Zack, you're going to see a guy that wants the challenge."
The Brewers’ left-fielder Ryan Braun scored an RBI double and first baseman Prince Fielder made an RBI single in the seventh inning and widened the lead to a 5-1. The Brewers’ reliever Kameron Loe and closer John Axford each tossed a perfect eighth and the
ninth inning respectively to cement the Brewers 41st win of the season.
"Braunie's hit, that changed the ballgame," Roenicke said. "I think the energy level was OK during the game, he was talking and there was some conversations, which when he's feeling really bad, he's not going to have those."
Jeremy Hellickson went for two runs on three hits, walked four and struck-out three batters over six innings in his 40th start of the season. He received his sixth loss that sent him to a 7-6 record with 3.09 ERA. His reliever Adam Russell allowed
two runs, James Phillip Howell scattered one run and Carlos Ramos and closer Andy Sonnanstine did not allow any run over their short spells.
