Milwaukee Brewers edge past the Chicago Cubs with 3-1 win – MLB News
Mike Fiers had another sensational game on Wednesday, August 29, pitching just over seven strong innings to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs by 3-1 at Wrigley Field. This was Brewers’ third and overall eighth consecutive win against the Chicago Cubs.
Also, this was Brewers’ eighth win in the last nine games, improving their record in the Division. With exceptionally solid innings, Fiers was then backed by John Axford who had his 22nd save of the season, sealing the victory for the Brewers.
Fiers allowed only four hits, allowing only a run to pave the way of victory for the Brewers with 2.85 ERA. Jeff Samardzija, who was going solid initially, could not quite maintain his grip on the game and allowed tree runs in his seventh inning. He was unable to gain a victory for the Cubs despite his 10 strike-outs.
It was Aramis Ramirez who laid a solid foundation for the Brewers in the very first inning, scoring the first run. But Darwin Barney grounded out to shortstop, allowing Bryan LaHair to single, levelling the score.
Also, Darwin Barney became the National League leader in fielding percentage on Wednesday. His performance won appreciation by team manager, Dale Sveum, among others.
"He's gone far and above preparation on an everyday basis to make himself better,” said team manager Dale Sveum. “He's made a conscious effort to be the best in baseball on an everyday basis," Sveum said. "Not one day have I seen him take any ground balls off or take any days off. It's been the same routine, same intensity every single day for him."
It was Jean Segura who first tied the score in the seventh. He then was then able to score a go-ahead run after the errors committed by the Cubs, allowing the Brewers to make the maximum of the opportunities given out to them.
With a 3-1 lead in their favour, the Brewers sent John Axford who was able to get another save, 22nd in 30 chances, to close the game with 3-1 victory for the Brewers, giving them a 3-0 lead in the four-game series.
