Milwaukee Brewers edge past the Cincinnati Reds with 6-3 win – MLB News
Martin Maldonado homered and drove in three runs on Monday, August 6 to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 at Miller Park, Milwaukee. Yovani Gallardo also pitched seven innings to keep the Reds' hitters at bay to pave the way for a Brewers’ victory.
This was second consecutive defeat for the Reds after they were previously beaten by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the last of three-game series. Bronson Arroyo, the team’s starter, gave up no less than 10 hits and five runs in just over five innings, rendering the Reds' defence completely ineffective – so it seemed.
But it was – for all the good reasons, an exciting day for the Brewers whose hitters had a heyday. Gallardo has played a lot of times against the Reds, and it has always been a challenge for him to face the Reds' hitters – with 5.06 ERA record in 14 starts against them.
"They have got pretty good hitters on that side, and I have faced them quite a bit," Gallardo said. "It's no secret. They know what I throw and what I like to throw. It's just a matter of keeping the ball down and moving around."
It was Yovani Gallardo who lay the foundation of victory for the Brewers with pitching five strong innings first, and then scoring a run in the fifth against Arroyo. With a 1-0 lead, Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart and Maldonado homered respectively to take the lead to 5-0 by the end of the sixth inning.
It as Zack Cozart who hit a solo homer in the seventh to bring the Brewers lead down to 5-1, following which Xavier Paul and Dioner Navarro scored each in the eighth to make it 5-3.
However, Maldonado scored a run in the eighth to bring back the Milwaukee Brewers in a strong position, giving them a 6-3 lead.
John Axford, who had earlier given a run in the eighth, then had a hitless ninth to conclude the game with 6-3 win for the Brewers. The team desperately needed a win for quite a while now, especially against a well-established side in the NL.
