Milwaukee Brewers face temporary setback as Jonathan Lucroy fractures pinkie finger
Milwaukee Brewers suffered a temporary setback when catcher, Jonathan Lucroy, fractured his pinkie finger on his throwing hand during Spring Training in Phoenix, Arizona. The injury was revealed on Wednesday and the Brewers have revealed to the press that
their backstop will undergo surgery soon.
The player was injured during blocking drills with the second full-squad workout. At first the Brewers thought the catcher jammed his right pinkie but an X – Ray revealed Lucroy actually, fractured it. The backstop will undergo surgery on Thursday in Phoenix.
Dr. Don Sheridan, who is a renowned hand specialist in Major League Baseball, will be performing the surgery. The doctor has worked with Rickie Weeks in recent months and has been called in to reinsert Jonathan’s finger.
General Manager, Doug Melvin, spoke about the situation.
“We feel OK for now,” Melvin said. “There's four weeks of Spring Training, so we'll have to wait and see the healing process. It doesn't appear that it should be more than 10 days into the season [before Lucroy is active]. ...
“It's better that it happened now than five days before the season, and then he misses a month of the season.”
There are replacement catchers available in the roster for the Brewers. George Kottarras is expected to play as a substitute till Lucroy recovers; Mike Rivera is also an option. Rivera was the backup backstop during 2006 and 2009 and is currently playing
in the Minor League.
There’s no confirmation on when Lucroy will make his way back to the club but it’s believed the player might have to go through an extended training session to be ready for the 2011 Major League Season.
“We'll wait and see what the process is,” Melvin said. “He'll have to get at-bats somehow.”
