Milwaukee Brewers fail to win series sweep of Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 - Part 2
The Philadelphia Phillies were successful in not being defeated by the Milwaukee Brewers for the third game straight. This comes as the first series defeat for the Phillies since the season started. Their previously spotless pitching was not up to the mark
and for a change the rest of the line-up in their team managed to contribute to the victory.
John Mayberry Jr. was the first one to hit against Chris Narveson as he lined a double to the left side of the field in the fifth inning with two outs. He ended up allowing three runs and four hits within six innings.
Cliff Lee’s performance was average as he gave up eight hits and three runs out of which two were earned within six innings.
"I didn't have my best stuff," Lee said. "I had to battle. They have a very good offense. A day you feel you don't have your best stuff, to be able to take the team to the sixth, seventh and have a chance to win, that's all you can ask for."
The Brewers had been impressive as well as consistent in their last two games against the National League East leading Phillies, as they won 6-3 in their first game. Next, they shocked everyone, especially Halladay as the Brewers collectively belted out
nine runs against the pitcher par excellence.
The Phillies started with a walk in the sixth innings, thanks to Wilson Valdez. Shane Victorino singled through second base after that and up came Placido Polanco. He lagged behind for a bit before he managed to tie the score 3-3. These runs came after 17
scoreless innings for the Phillies.
The Brewers’ manager, Ron Roenicke was already cautious of Polanco. He said, "Polanco is a great hitter, every year we try to figure out how to get him out."
Carlos Gomez hit a one out single and moved to third base as Ryan Braun singled and then scored on the grounder that Prince Fielder pitched. In the third innings Milwaukee added an unearned run to the scoreboard. Braun belted a two out towards the right
field line which was dropped by Valdez.
Casey McGehee later singled to the right side of the field but was caught as he was trying to round the bag. This marked the end of the innings.
The Phillies’ pitching finally got the much needed offence support that they have been missing in the previous few games. They managed to put in a good performance to take the victory and avoid the series sweep by the Brewers.
It will be interesting to see the Phillies carry their momentum into their next series. The Brewers put in a decent effort, but it was not enough to overpower the Phillies.
