Milwaukee Brewers focused on bullpen – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers have a certain wish-list that they want to see unshortened when it comes to their rotation and bullpen for the next season. However, they are cognizant of the constraints – which are mostly financial.
On Tuesday, December 4, the Brewers' manager Ron Roenicke shed some light on what the club was thinking with regards to developments in the Winter Meetings. Facing a complication in payroll parity, wherein they have $80 million for 2013, the Brewers have to meticulously move while signing new contracts.
Having cut ties with the relievers, there is a need for bringing some that fill the bullpen. The Brewers are all for having a realistic approach.
"With what our budget is going to be at, Doug has certain things he can do, and so no matter what is out there and what we would like to have, we need to make decisions on what we can do," Roenicke said. "I can name a lot of the free agents out there that I would love to have on our team. Is that really a reality that can happen? Probably not."
If the bullpen did not rise up to the expectations in the first half of the season, they fared comparatively better in the second half. Be that as it may, it was rotation wherein the Brewers came across as a fierce competitor.
"If they pitch the way they did last year for that short period, yes we are," Roenicke said.
There may be holes in the bullpen that the Brewers are looking forward to filling. However, the rotation remains intact with the likes of Marco Estrada, Yovani Gallardo, Mike Fiers, Wily Peralta and Chris Narveson being there, the club does not seem particularly worried.
A few necessary changes and adjustments made, the starters will certainly be the source of strength for the club.
The past season culminated with the club’s failure to make it to the post-season. Nonetheless, Roenicke believes the team can well be championship-calibre next season, something that is not a far-fetched observation given the offensive and defensive strength of the Milwaukee Brewers.
