Milwaukee Brewers look for new hitting coach as Craig Counsell’s status unknown – MLB News
With Dale Sveum leaving the Milwaukee Brewers to join the Chicago Cubs, the Milwaukee Brewers are looking for a new hitting coach. Sveum had imbued a new sense of confidence in the Brewers, making them a team that qualified for the playoffs, facing the now
World Series Champions St. Louis Cardinals.
The Milwaukee Brewers’ general manager Doug Melvin has stated that his team manager Ron Roenicke will talk about the new hitting coach in the coming few days. What names the Milwaukee Brewers consider is something that cannot be said right now.
Also, importantly, the Chicago Cubs had sought permission to talk to the pitching coach of the Brewers’ Chris Bosio. The report has it that they have been granted permission to formally talk to the coach. Bosio and Sveum, who is now the manager of the Chicago
Cubs, have previously remained team-mates.
Doug Melvin and Ron Roenicke stated that the two will talk by Friday to see if they needed to interview more people for the slot of hitting coach. "Ron and I were going to talk on Friday," said Melvin. "He's had conversations with four different people at
this point. We'll talk on Friday, and we may have a decision at that time. Or, at least our conversation will lead to determining whether we want to interview any other people."
As for the non-playing role of Craig Counsell within the Milwaukee Brewers, Melvin did not openly talk about it, saying the nature of talk was private. "I talked to him. I'd like to keep the conversations private, from Craig's standpoint," Melvin said.
The reports suggest that Counsell still is intent upon being a player. What task he was to be handed over is unknown and that stands as the only reason why the Brewers will like to see him having some role within the organisation.
Melvin stated that there was an opportunity for Counsell to play. The 41-year-old Milwaukee Brewers’ slugger had played 107 games this year with having remained 157 at-bats for the team.
He scored a total of 19 runs with 28 hits to his credit, scoring 9 RBIs with 20 BB and having had a .178 average for the team. His career average stands at .255 with 1624 games that he has played.
Remaining 4741 at-bats, he has scored 647 runs with 42 home-runs to his credit and having 1208 hits and 390 RBIs, having .686 OPS.
What Counsell and the Milwaukee Brewers decide in the end is unknown. But whatever decision comes, it is expected that Counsell will have his role within the Milwaukee Brewers in the days to come.
