Milwaukee Brewers lose 2-5 to Chicago Cubs – MLB Update
The Milwaukee Brewers could not sustain their characteristic brilliance on Monday, September 19 and lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-2 at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
The Cubs left a lot for the Brewers to be desired as Geovany Soto hit a couple of two-run homers to beat Milwaukee.
Losing the three-game series opener might not be a harbinger of good things for the Brewers as they are all set for clinching the National League Central title. "You're still just trying to take it game by game," Brewers’ starter Chris Narveson said. "Magic
numbers don't mean anything until you clinch."
All the same, the team does not want to yield to desperation. That is where they keep their nerves strong. "It's just a game," Brewers’ catcher Jonathan Lucroy said. "We got beat today. Hopefully we can come tomorrow and get a win."
Soto, on the other hand, proved a boon for Chicago. The Cubs which do not have a reliever like Kerry Wood after he got unfit would certainly require a lot from the offence, as Geovany Soto delivered it.
Interestingly, Soto also put an end to a six-game losing streak to the Milwaukee Brewers and also got three career multi-homer games against the same team.
"I heard about that, but I think it's maybe because we play against them so much," he said. "I got a lot of opportunities against the division."
Having Chris Narveson to pitch for the Brewers, Jerry Hairston Jr. homered to left in the third inning against Casey Coleman after the first two innings went scoreless. Hairston’s homer gave an early 1-0 lead to the Brewers.
However, that did not last for long as Soto had his first two-run homer to left, putting the Cubs in charge of the game with a decent 2-1 lead. Casey Coleman then pitched some strong innings to keep the Cubs afloat.
Soto had a single to centre in the fourth inning to give the team a 3-1 lead while the Brewers could hardly find any opportunity to take the score up.
Things went beyond the Brewers’ Marco Estrada, who had just replaced Narveson, when Soto had another two-run homer to left that took the score to 5-1 for the Chicago Cubs. This was the third multi-homer for Soto in his career and all three came against the
Brewers.
Having maintained their dominance throughout the game, the Cubs brought Carlos Marmol to pitch the ninth inning. The closer gave up a homer to Casey McGehee, but sent the other hitters packing to wrap up the gap with a 5-2 victory for the Chicago. The Cubs
put in a tremendous effort as they fought hard throughout the game and got a much needed win over the Brewers.
