Milwaukee Brewers may use Jose Veras as the seventh-inning guy
The Milwaukee Brewers indicated on Thursday, March 15, that Jose Veras may become a seventh- inning guy for the club with the start of the new season. The reliever was only recently acquired by the Brewers at a time when the bullpen needed reliable arms.
Having got the options of John Axford and Francisco Rodriguez available in the eighth and ninth inning, Veras could be instrumental to embolden the bullpen by coming in the seventh.
Veras made his case stronger with the Wednesday outing against the Chicago Cubs. This was to be his fourth game in the Cactus League. With that, he has made a strong point to get a chance on the mound to throw.
The team manager Ron Roenicke seems content and pleased with the performance this player has so far exhibited. Among other things, the most important weapon that Jose Veras employs and effectively uses to his advantage is the breaking ball, which – in Roenicke’s
view, is scary for the right hander.
"His breaking ball is really scary for a right-hander," Roenicke said. "It looks like it's a fastball coming right at him, and has a nice break on it."
Veras had previously remained associated with the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was only in December 2011 that the Brewers opted to go for trading this player with Casey McGehee. Since then he has got regular chances in the Cactus League, paving the way for the
regular season as well.
The hitters, in Roenicke’s opinion, will be in trouble once this reliever hurls pitches.
"They're gonna be in trouble [when he keeps the ball down]," Roenicke said. "I know command has been an issue just looking at his totals in the past. But when he throws strikes and puts the ball over the plate, you look at the batting average against and
it's just outstanding."
With the confidence being reposed in Veras, the Brewers have indeed ensured building a strong defence. Supported by an equally strong offence, the club will have too well-built combination to easily fall into any trouble when it comes to the upcoming games
in the regular season.
