Milwaukee Brewers outrival Chicago Cubs with 4-1 victory – MLB Update
Yovani Gallardo pitched seven solid innings on Tuesday, August 28, to help the Milwaukee Brewers secure an emphatic 4-1 win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. This was the club’s second consecutive win against the Cubs in the four-game series.
The young Jeff Bianchi came up with a majestic three-run homer in the second inning to solidify the Brewers' grip, supported by the ace starter, Gallardo. The rookie hitter with his homer surprised the awed fans and above all, the team manager.
"I didn't expect him to swing," Brewers' manager Ron Roenicke said. "He had the green light, but I didn't expect him to swing. I was glad he did -- not just because of the outcome, but he's got the pitcher behind him."
After hitting his first big hit in the Majors on Saturday, Bianchi’s second hit against Travis Wood brought a sense of satisfaction for the player as he had a rather slow start of his Major League career, remaining 0-for-15 initially.
"It calmed me down a little bit. I don't think I was putting too much pressure on myself, because I've gone 0 for (15) before in my career,” said Bianchi.
Cubs only run came through Wood’s bat, hitting a solo homer to left in the third inning. But that could not do a lot for the club as Gallardo maintained his grip, having a dominant presence on the mound.
"I've been able to command my curveball. That makes a huge difference," Gallardo said. "I made some mistakes with the fastball tonight, but being able to throw that curveball for a strike opens a little bit more."
Norichika Aoki doubled and stole third in the eighth to make it 4-1 for the Brewers as the Cubs’ bullpen failed to hold off the Brewers' offence.
John Axford then came in the ninth to get his 21st save of the season in 29 chances, improving the Brewers’ record in the National League Central with the win. With 2-0 lead in the four-game series, the Brewers will play the third game on Wednesday as they will try hard to overwhelm the Cubs.
