Milwaukee Brewers overcome resilient Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in the tenth – MLB Update
The Milwaukee Brewers overcame the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in Game 5 of the National League Division Series on Friday, October 7 at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to cement their spot for the Championship Series.
Diamondbacks were on the verge of yet another historic comeback, but John Axford proved to be the support Milwaukee needed in halting the momentum.
Axford pitched a perfect tenth for the Brewers to keep the scores level and give his offence a chance to wrap it up in the bottom half. It took his team just ten pitches in the tenth inning to score the winner and send the D-backs reeling out of the post-season.
Gerardo Parra scored for Arizona in the ninth inning to push the game into the tenth inning, but J.J. Putz failed to hold it together for his team in the end, allowing Carlos Gomez a run on Nyjer Morgan’s single and losing it for the Diamondbacks.
After a dramatic season, the NLCS just slipped out of Arizona’s hand. They first toppled the reigning World Champions San Francisco Giants to win the NL West crown and then came back from 0-2 down to level the NLDS 2-2.
Expressing his joy after the game, Morgan said, "It's a lot, man. Basically just everything that I've had to overcome, just the stuff that people go out there and perceive about me, everything. Just all my haters. I just wanted to show them that I can play
this game, even though I have a fun, bubbly personality. I still come to win, and I'm a winner."
Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke praised Morgan’s effort and highlighted that the youngster fired when the team needed him the most.
Earlier in the game, Justin Upton homered for the Diamondbacks in the third inning to give his team an early advantage in the crunch encounter. Morgan scored the equaliser for the home-team in the fourth inning before slugger Ryan Braun helped the Brewers
to a one-run lead in the sixth inning.
Prince Fielder, probably playing in his last season for the Brewers, was content with the win and stated that all the hard work is paying off.
The Brewers will now face St. Louis Cardinals for the pennant in NLCS.
